The Blood of Our Labor, The Force of Our Breath. This is a piece that speaks to where we are in our world with consumerism. All of us in the USA, and other parts of the world, depend so heavily on the labor of others' for even the most basic needs such as food. Where are we to turn if the labor stops and the food is no more???

Essential Peace: an art installation. 9 feet wide x 12 feet long x 9 feet tall.
Made from a steel frame, hand-painted and hand-woven cotton, garden rods and aluminum stakes. Here it is pictured in Hurkamp Park, Fredericksburg, Virginia. The first installation April 25, 2009.

This work has been inspired by the civil war battle at Sunken Road, Fredericksburg, VA 1862. Weaving history into the present was the initial spark for this project. What can history do to inform the present? Does a spiritual presence inform us the way our past actions do? This art installation is meant to provide a place to bring light to what we can do about peace and healing from war. The shape and size are that of an officer's tent from the civil war period. The ends of the structure are open and inviting, unlike the officer's tents. This is my interpretation of what healing might look like, and how art might inspire conversation about peace.

House of Hope. Cotton. Paint. Wood. Brass hardware. The idea is to create a structural piece in which there is  an opening into the soul of the viewer to allow for hope to enter. This piece has been dyed, woven, printed on, painted on, shibori dyed, discharged and redyed. Lots of layers!
